gunpoint in a name change for the open airport is approved as a clash between san francisco and oakland continues. >> when fun time from the bay area's local news station. >> you're watching kron 4 news 10. good evening and thank you for joining us for kron for news at 10. i'm ken wayne and i'm vicki liviakis. we begin with a developing story out of the south bay tonight. 2.80, off ramp at mclaughlin avenue in san jose is currently blocked after police say a man was seriously injured in a shooting there. police first reported the shooting just before 6 o'clock this evening. officers did not share any details about a suspect or why the shooting happened. but they are urging drivers to avoid that area. oakland international airport has a new name and it is causing controversy. port commissioners unanimously approved the rebrand to san francisco bay international airport earlier today. and the new name is big. think a lot of pushback from the city of san francisco and a legal battle is brewing. harper's

dan thorn joins us now live at the airport in oakland least it used to be called oakland airport. we're all confused. and can you straighten this out? >> yeah, vicki, it's the same airport. just a new name. but the san francisco city attorney david chiu has already sued over and even sent a letter yesterday urging the court to reconsider and maybe have san francisco and oakland work together to come up with an alternative name. but the port instead chose to move ahead with their plans and they say they'll also have a response to san francisco's lawsuit. there are now 2 bay area airports with the name san fsancisco in their title, a unanimous vote by the oakland port board thursday approved the switch from oakland international airport. >> to san francisco bay, oakland international airport, nobody owns the san francisco bay and it is the most identify identifiable geographic indicator. and we

happen to sit on on the san francisco bay and we just want people to know where we are so they can come enjoy. >> our beautiful city port board, president barbara lesslie, along with other commissioners says the name change will increase the airport's visibility. >> well, also giving potential travelers more options in the bay area. and a name kings change can certainly do that. that brings that knowledge for people past the mississippi to really understand where oakland sits in the greater bay area and also internationally, of understanding from people from around the world where oakland is in this greater bay area. but the city of san francisco does not want this new name to happen. a lawsuit claims that iifringes on san francisco international airport's trademark in a statement to kron for the san francisco city attorney's office says it is disappointing that oakland chose to ignore our multiple offers to collaborate an alternative names and avoid litigation. we have no choice but to move forward with next steps in our trademark

lawsuit, porter attorney barry richardson has requested for a declaratory judgment as a counterclaim to the lawsuit. she hopes the court will agree that san francisco bay is a geographic term and not exclusive to the city nor county of san francisco. we were not seeking money damages with that were only seeking a declaration from the court that we can continue to use the mark that the board to support. well, there were some residents spoke before today's vote and they were concerned that if there's going to be more people showing up here that would create more air traffic in more air pollution here in the city of oakland. >> but there are also some business leaders and city leaders like councilmember noel gallo. believe that this name change is going to be good for the area in oakland, dan thorn kron. 4 hey, dan, real quick. i don't know if you know the answer this, but any idea of when we might see some signs and official name change is taking place in oakland.

>> that's probably going to take some time. we did. we haven't been given a definitive answer on that. but we know that the work is going to be starting. >> probably soon because the name is affective immediately as of today's vote. if you go online, you try to search the airport. it may still say oakland international airport, but a lot of information that you'll see on there will say san francisco bay oakland international airport on it. so the signs and all that's going to cost a lot of money. eventually it will get to that point. but of course, we'll see where this legal situation goes from here. all right, dan thorn live oakland international airport. thank you, dan, on francisco bay. >> new at 10 and alaska airlines flight hit a bird while landing at sfo this afternoon. take a look at this picture showing a dent on the plane's engine cowling you see in the upper left-hand side. alaska airlines says after the fight from boston landed, the plane was pulled from service for inspection. no emergency was declared prior to the arrival at the gate. well, it

turned out to be a very warm day around the bay area. today could be warmer in some parts. >> and actually cooler than others for tomorrow. let's check out your wake-up weather early tomorrow morning. we may see a couple patches of fog along the coastline. a sign of some changes. temperatures. a pretty mild, though, generally in the mid to upper 50's as we head toward 08:00am here comes that sunshine really going to warm things up outside. some temperatures near 70 degrees inland, even inside the bay by 08:00am. and then we're breaking out the 70's, sunny and bright as we head in toward the middle of the morning. big coming our way. we'll talk more about that a few minutes. all right, lawrence, the man accused of hitting 2 people, including a 14 year-old girl during a police chase in san francisco. he's pleaded not guilty to all charges his arraignment today revealed more about rodney jefferson's past run-ins with the law and just how prosecutors say. >> he hit that teenage girl kron four's. dan kerman has more. >> thursday afternoon, 54 year-old rodney jefferson

pleaded not guilty to 2 counts of leaving the scene of an accident. reckless driving with great bodily injury, evading an officer and driving on a suspended license. the charges stem from his arrest tuesday for hitting 2 pedestrians and leading san francisco police on a chase across the city. authorities say tuesday morning's incident began with jefferson hitting one person while doing donuts at market in jones and then leading police on a chase across town during that pursuit. prosecutors say jefferson hit a 14 year-old girl who was in a crosswalk outside francisco middle school. prosecutors say a vehicle was stopped to let the teenager cross. but jefferson drove around that car and hit her. the student will survive but has a broken ankle, a dislocated shoulder and bruising to the head during thursday's hearing jefferson made and inaudible outburst when prosecutors said he showed no remorse once arrested and instead went into a profane tirade about his

driving skills. prosecutors also told the judge jefferson has 14 prior felony convictions, including one in 2018 for battery with injury on a school employee. the judge called tuesday's incident egregious and said releasing jefferson on bail was a clear risk to public safety. jefferson tried to speak up, but the judge silenced him and continued to explain why she would not be releasing him on bail again. jefferson will remain locked up without bail, at least until his preliminary hearing on may 22nd. >> at the hall of justice in san francisco, dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> santa clara county authorities say they made one of the largest fentanyl seizures ever. they found 13 pounds of the deadly drug inside a san jose home under a baby's crib. authorities say they raided the home yesterday and found 25,000 fentanyl pills in a backpack. officers say they also found marijuana just a few feet away from the baby's playpen and cocaine

right next to the baby's formula in the kitchen. the parents were arrested on several charges. >> east bay woman speaking out tonight about the deadly hit and run of her son's father and the justice system. she says failed her family. greg turnage was killed on mother's day 3 years ago while out on a walk in oakland, the man convicted in his death will not serve any time behind bars. on first theresa has the story. >> and he was just funny and gentle she was amazing father. that's what made me really fall in love with hem is angie bray says she is still in a state of shock. and at that point, it's just kind of on wednesday, the man who struck her partner grade turnage and father to their son miles pled guilty to hit and run. >> leading to death and vehicular manslaughter. despite that fact, brace as tony home will serve no time

>> and this >> process with the legal system. kron 4 reached out to the alameda county da's office about the oakland case in why suspect kamana was able to be out on bail and not face a prison sentence for his crime. ray says him on a sentence of 6 years amounted to he's serving time at home. kron 4 has not received an explanation for the sentence. decision yet. no playing. >> dollar amount on his you know, and that's what they've done. and the hired a private investigator to look into crack and try to find any way too diminishes worth as a person. and as a father, bray says her family has sought a civil suit against a mano. but that has been painful as well races. in the meantime, they continue to honor greg's life. >> and keep his memory alive. theresa stasi, kron, 4 news. >> quite the spectacle for people in san francisco's marina district. there's an osprey flying right there.

>> another mail carrier was robbed here in the bay area. this time in dublin. and as you can see here, >> it was all caught on camera. looks like a person has a gun there. kron four's sara stinson talked with neighbors and has the story. >> home security camera captures the terrifying moment. a mail carrier in dublin was robbed at gunpoint. this happened monday afternoon around 4.30, on a bespoke court video shows 2 masked men wearing all black approached the male woman. one point a gun at her dublin. police say the men demanded the carriers mailbox key and phone. you can see her go to the usps truck to get her phone and handed over. then the 2 men run off.

thankfully, the male woman was not physically injured. neighbors called 9-1-1 and police arrived shortly after to investigate. i went down to cul-de-sac. >> probably within 10 or 15 minutes after happen after seeing police in his neighborhood, mike grant went down to check it out. once he learned about the robbery, grant went to check his high-quality security camera system to see if it captured anything useful. >> that's when he saw what he believes to be the getaway car narrowed it down to this. a blue grants as police and the u.s. postal inspectors. investigators came by to get the video. he's lived in this dublin neighborhood for nearly 30 years and says only recently has there been a spike in crime. we've had a rash of crime on this west side of town. that's something that kind starts to wake me up. grant says he's been talking with neighbors about ways to protect their homes, to start putting some cameras up to help. >> and alarm systems and

everything like that. be a little proactive is what i'm trying tell people. he also attended the dublin city council meeting tuesday to talk about the importance of security cameras, especially after monday's robbery. they got to start doing something. we >> have a lot of cameras in town, but they're not up in these neighborhoods. as for the mail carrier grant says he's checked in on her. she's going to take a month off of work to emotionally recover. you know, we're always out talking to her and stuff like that. so she's kind of like family. >> so i stopped by just to make sure she was ok, i let her know that we're all thinking about the postal service is offering $150,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves. i'm sara stinson reporting in dublin kron. 4 news. >> porsche's pouch from a dealership in fremont. police are still trying to find one of the people responsible. i'll show you a picture of the suspect. they're still looking for pictured with one of the vehicles. police say last

month 2 people broke into the porsche dealership on pushing away and drove the cars right through the glass. the first suspect nova moore was arrested last month in hayward. police say they found rifle storm property. even a police radio scanner inside his home. anyone who has information on the second suspect is asked to call fremont police. >> fire officials are preparing people for the start of fire season as the weather is heating up and drying out following a wet and snowy winter. it's possible for a delayed fire season, but crews still want people to know what to do and how to act in case of an emergency. >> but you should you be evacuated. you your go bag do you know where you and your family are going to meet up? if you're evacuated now is it is the time that you want to be creating not defensible space. >> fire officials also suggest signing up for emergency alerts in your county to make sure that you're well informed if emergency occurs refers meteorologist lawrence karnow standing by with a look at how

long this warm weather is going to be with yeah, boy, quite a day around the bay area today. going to be interesting. are things going to be hotter tomorrow? you'd be right. if you think in some spots might be cooler. you'd also be right as we'll see a big change in the pattern. now, we've already begun to see high pressure. we can just a little bit along the coastline and that's allowed for that sea breeze. and look at that fog that is now racing its way in the golden gate bridge. now it's compressed all the way down the service year. dense fog driving across the bridge tonight. but what it does tell you is that that ridge going to break down eventually. and we're going to talk about much cooler temperatures, maybe as early as tomorrow along the coastline. right now, look at the numbers out the door. you're still at 71 degrees in concord. 66 a beautiful evening in livermore. 64 degrees in santa rosa. 67 in san jose. 65 in san francisco. 58 now into oakland. well, we have that nice offshore wind and that offshore wind brought with it. beautiful weather warm in those temperatures all the way the coastline, then late in the day, all of a sudden we started to see a sea breeze. some of that patchy fog begin to appear along the

coastline. now overnight tonight, we may see a couple patches linger out toward the beach is not going to be much. but i think by tomorrow afternoon really going to start to ramp up of low clouds and fog and cool down the temperatures at least near the beaches. but anywhere away from the yeah, it's going to be on the hot side. some 90's likely to pop up in some of the valleys by tomorrow afternoon. a pretty toasty temperatures out there all around of fact, in san francisco, maybe some mid 70's, sunny warm oakland. how about 83 degrees tomorrow? if you like a warmer that 88 in san jose, you're looking at 90's in the tri valley. >> the alameda county health department is facing a shortage of restaurant health inspectors and that is hurting workers at some fast food restaurant. the discovery comes after we reported on that rat infestation at the mcdonald's in oakland where the health department ended up shutting down the restaurant. kron four's lezla gooden explains. >> fast food workers over the last few weeks have been striking calling for better working conditions. one of

them includes the yelp oil loco off of international boulevard in oakland here, workers have filed a complaint to cal osha claiming they have been nearly electrocuted due to flooding the kitchen where to put into it. >> really i. dane and the it was still asleep. 80. >> greasy. >> also, they agreed on fire at a california fast food workers. union says the workers decided to strike for 3 days last week looking for improvement. we reached out to the alameda county health department who share that currently there was not in a sign health inspector for this restaurant and have been over a year since its last inspection on monday. that changed after our reporting and inspection was conducted. the restaurant past received 5 violations, including an clean food and non-food surfaces, cleaning supplies, not properly stored bathrooms in

of nurses at laguna honda hospital is asking for more than a pat on the back. >> nurses picketed outside the hospital between 2 and 4 this afternoon asking the city to take action in hiring more staff before admitting more patients. the nurses say in order to protect and improve the quality of patient care, hiring more staff is inevitable. the group is hopeful to come to an agreement with the city but says it's prepared to strike

>> now at 10, 30 big changes could soon be coming to our utility bills california. public utilities commission has approved a plan to implement a monthly fix charge for many california in our capitol correspondent eytan wallace has a closer look at the plan and reaction. >> well, here at the state energy building where the meeting took place, supporters

argued the plan will benefit low income californians, but opponents say it will hurt the very people. it was supposed to help the vote is 4, 0. the item passes with that vote. the california public utilities commission or cpsc approved a plan allowing major utility companies in the state, including pg and socal edison and san diego, gas and electric to impose a fixed charge on most of their customers, monthly utility bills. >> specifically the plan includes a new flat fee of $24.15 per month. coming up to about $290 per year. in return, the utilities will cut their electricity prices by 5 to $0.7 per kilowatt hour. supporters say the plan will help pay for grid maintenance and in the long run will make it more affordable for californians who need to use electricity for green technology like overnight electric vehicle charging backers also believe it low income californians noting per the plan those already enrolled in the low income, california alternate rates for energy program or care.

governor and they're going to set the what to say. >> you know, 2 or 3 years from now, they don't continue to raise that. the it impacts every single rate payer in california. >> and the governor's spokesperson said he's confident the plan will lower costs for millions of californians as eugenie. and so cal edison customers will see the plan take effect for them in late 2025. and pg and e customers will see the plan to cut for them in early 2026. reporting in sacramento wallace kron. 4 news. >> police in brentwood have arrested a suspect accused of stealing $1400 worth of merchandise from a michaels arts and crafts store. officers are responded to the store and saw 32 year-old matthew davis of antioch riding away on a bicycle after dumping the stolen merchandise. that's when davis ran into a parked patrol car while trying to flee. this was not injured and was safely taken into custody. a jury has convicted a former candidate for santa clara county sheriff or falsely certifying that she

had the required experience to run for the job. 51 year-old and colton was listed on the primary ballot and received more than 4% of the vote based on her false certification. state law requires candidates for sheriff have at least one year of law enforcement experience within the last 5 years or a certificate showing advanced training in law enforcement. colton had neither. the district attorney's office says that the number votes case in support of colton was not enough to change the overall outcome of the election. she was released today on time served. 21 year-old motorcyclist is dead after a crash in rohnert park. officials say was riding in the area of redwood and business part drives last night when he collided with a car. >> the motorcyclist was taken to the hospital where he died. 2 people in the car were taken to hospital for their injuries, but are expected to be okay. according to officials, alcohol does not seem to be a factor in the crash. the names of everyone involved her being withheld

during the investigation. >> the man accused of attempting to kill his family by driving off a cliff in san mateo county. will have a final hearing tomorrow in a mental health diversion court. that case hinges on what kind of mental health crisis, the father was suffering when he drove off highway one in january of last year, his wife and 2 children. they were inside the family's car when it plunged 250 feet off a cliff. amazingly, though, they all survived. the judge could decide to divert his case out of criminal court and into a mental health treatment program instead. but if the judge rules in favor of the defense patel is his name. he'll be freed from jail immediately. and once he completes a two-year program, his record will be cleared. bart's future may depend on a tax measure set to be on a ballot in 2026, according to bart's, new budget deficit >> transit agency will be facing a 35 million dollar deficit by 2026. if passed,

the tax measure would bring in more than a billion dollars every year for bart. but if it fails, the bart board is warning of sir, making some drastic cuts. >> imagine if just bart close at 09:00pm and certain stations were closed and no, no trains at all on the weekend. those are the types of things that our reality. i'm not anytime soon. we've got 2 years of that. we know that we have funding, but then we need to focus on that ballot measure. >> bart says the deficit is partly due to declining tax revenues and lower ridership than expected. they said people working from home as really hurt bart, the bart vote aboard rather won't vote on a budget until june. >> governor gavin newsom putting pressure on half moon bay officials to approve housing for farmworkers. the 40 unit project would provide affordable housing for senior agriculture workers last year following the half moon bay mass shooting. the governor met with survivors and toward living conditions of the workers in that area. well,

since them has budgeted millions in funding and resources to ensure that those workers receive support from the state. the half moon bay planning commission could move the housing project forward next week during their next meeting on tuesday. all right. let's go outside and take a look at the 4 zone forecast as we give you a live look at sfo and it sure is feeling and acting like. >> bay area summer, the head. it is. well, although it very summer, we see a lot more fog up. there we'll see plenty that. come with that for sure. but >> you have the fog begin to move it along the coastline. just kind of a thin layer. so the only effects are going to see here right along the coastline. and just inside the bay. otherwise. yeah, it looks like a nice night ahead. some very mild temperatures around the bay area. some places holding out inland still in the 60's and the 70's that fog has begun to creep back on shore. that's a sign of that ridge of high pressure weakening that offshore wind changing from an offshore to an onshore. you can see some

of that fog out there right now making its way toward the golden gate bridge, really making for a gorgeous picture. download look to battle, though. i've early this evening, but you can even across that bridge to the fog has lifted a little bit there. but more on the temperatures today across most the bay-area warmed up again. the one exception right along the coastline. and that was the first that there may be a change in the weather pattern. just 2 degrees cooler in half moon bay every well. warmed up between 2 to 5 degrees. looks like around the bay area today. lots of nice numbers. if you've been looking forward to some warm weather, boy, you certainly have even in san francisco not used to the warmer weather. 81 degrees there. 83 oakland, 86 in san jose. 83 in live more than 86. both conquered and santa rosa all around the bay area. really some nice weather out there. but tonight, mostly clear inland. you'll see that patchy fog along the coastline. tomorrow we're off and running again with some very nice weather watch for that fog to really ramp up as we head toward tomorrow afternoon along the coastline and start to make its way inside the bay even a little bit earlier. but right now

we're looking good out there as high pressure sits over head, going to bring another warm to hot day around parts of the bay area. in fact, overnight tonight that ridge is kind of settling in. so here we go are often running. here's your computer model as we head through the night tonight, maybe a patch or 2 of fog along the coastline, not going to be much. and then in the afternoon, look what happens here. we start to see that fog and low cloud cover really begin to ramp up outside right temperatures around the bay area tomorrow. let's break it down. you're going to see 60's and 70's in the san francisco downtown, maybe about 74. may be about 65, though, in cooler to sunset. little cooler out along the coastline and expect that fog kind of pick up as we head toward the afternoon hours inside the lots of warm sunshine all day long. and boy, it's going to get really warm further south. 85 degrees carl's 83 in mount view. them are breaking out the 90's in parts of the south bay by tomorrow afternoon, getting hot their hot 90's in the tri valley as well about 82 in san leandro, 80 in richmond, 90 in concord about 91. one of the hotter spots in pittsburgh and 85 degrees in napa. so these going to slowly cool down over
